Everestpoker.nl – Drinking at the Poker Table

18 December 2008

everest poker - For players who are serious about their poker, drinking at the poker table is not something which is generally indulged in, however there are exceptions to the rule. Scotty Nguyen for one, who is very often seen drinking beer at the final table of an event, as he was when he won the main event in 1998, and this years ’50k Horse’ event too.

PLAY NOW

I think the main point with drinking is that it can impair your judgement and so is probably ill advised in most cases. Having said this, I should admit that personally, I do enjoy a couple of drinks at my local game, but I always drink them slowly so they do not affect my play noticeably. Casual games are partly about having an enojoyable evening, and so there is nothing wrong with having a drink whilst you play, as long as you are sensible about it.

Usually, I find that alcohol is not conducive to patient play, and the temptations to get involved in hands and bluff at pots increases. In some ways this can turn out well, as it did for me when I won my first live tournament, always being aggressive and keeping my opponent under pressure when we were heads up. Regardless of the ways that things could feasibly work out better for you, most of the time, you will find yourself playing looser poker after a few drinks, and making more mistakes too. So if you wish to drink while you play, I would certainly advise moderation.

Betsson.com – Drawing Games

6 December 2008

www.betsson.com - Drawing games are types of game which involve swapping a number of your cards at set points during the hand. This obviously means there are no community cards to speak of, but there are always hints to what your opponent may have, despite the fact that you cannot see any of the cards they are using to make up their hand.

PLAY NOW

One drawing game would be 2-7 Triple draw, but unfortunately in that game, there is no concrete clues in the number of cards exchanged. You can of course tell that they have 4 low cards if your opponent draws 1 card, but you cannot know just how low their cards are.

Mostly, you have to judge whether you are leading based on the strength of your own cards and the size of your opponents raises, which can end up being a little inaccurate sometimes (from personal experiences).
Five card Draw holds far more accurate information in the number of cards drawn however. With an opponent drawing 1 card, almost always, they have a two pair if they raised preflop, or a big draw, if they flat called or checked.

Two cards drawn, most often means a player who likes to hold a high card with their pair (usually a mid to lower pair wanting to make an aces or kings up two pair). It could also mean a three of a kind however, but preflop raises or lack of raises, should give you an indication of which. Three drawn will almost always mean a pair, with a raise preflop indicating the most likely scenario is kings or aces.

In the lower level games at least, this way of reading hands in Five Card Draw, is surprisingly accurate.

Everestpoker.nl – Deals and Bets off the Table:

24 November 2008

Everest poker – In recent times there seems to be an ever increasing trend of players both wagering money as ‘prop bets’ off the table whilst playing, and also deals being done when two or more players remain in a tournament.

For Pokeren KLICK HEIR

First of all, it is my feeling that if players want to bet on things off the table, should be entitled to do so as it is their money and they can gamble it how they wish. The only problem I would have with it, is if the players are paying more attention to keeping notes on who owes what than to their cards, or the game in hand. I have seen this happen in televised tournaments, and makes the players look like simple gambling addicts, rather than some of the greatest poker minds in the world. It gives the impression that game is not engaging or enjoyable, and that they are only playing poker on television because they are being paid to do so.

As for deals being done to split the money a certain number of ways in the latter stages of a tournament, I think this goes against the very ethic of the game. Everyone has different opinions of course, but my feeling is that when we sit down to play poker, the goal is to eliminate all the opposition, and emerge as the last person standing. I have personally seen an increase in players splitting money at my local tournament, and although they are well within their rights to do this if they wish, it is not something I would ever do. I will always choose to battle on to try and win, even if the deal offered by the other player was an exceptionally good one.

everestpoker.nl – Points on Bluffing:

13 November 2008

everestpoker.nl – In general terms, there are many instances where raising is beneficial, but we cannot raise every pot all of the time. Raising has it’s advantages, in the fact that we give ourselves two chances to win rather than the calling player, whose only chance is to turn over the best hand.

For Pokeren CLICK HERE

The raiser of course, has the extra chance of his opponent not having a strong enough hand to call, regardless of what the raiser has. In this way, we can see the benefits of being aggressive, but as with many things in poker, there has to be a balance.

Every player knows approximately how often they have a strong hand, and if a player is raising with a frequency far above that figure, they know that at least some of the time, their opponent is bluffing. The more often we bluff, the more chance we have of getting caught, but remember we do not have to push all our chips in to bluff someone. Sometimes you could even say that the smaller raise on a dangerous board, gives the impression that we do not want to force a player out, rather than the truth of it.

If the opponent feels it is cheap enough to call your small raise anyway, you have built a pot to steal on the next round of betting. When we reach that next round of betting we can make the statement that we have found an interested player and are no longer afraid of forcing them out with our big hand. This statement is made with a larger raise, but as always, you are trying to be sure in your own mind, that your opponent does not have the big hand you are representing.

How Often Should you Bluff:

3 November 2008

One very good Holdem player that I know, recently said to me that if you take some time to really look at how many of the big pots you lose, are lost whilst bluffing, you can see that in the long run it is not profitable to bluff often.

KLIK HIER

I have to agree that there is a great deal of sense in what he is saying, as bluffing is usually a case of risking much, to earn little. But as players, we of course find our own styles of play with which we become comfortable. As a notorious bluffer at my local game, I certainly get more action when I make a big hand, so some things even out in that respect I feel. Also, if you never bluff at a pot, you have to assume that any players who are paying attention will see this, and be wary about calling your bets.

Despite the fact that advertising bluffs or being caught bluffing give you more chance of being called when you make a real hand, it is important to remember that you can’t win every pot, and you don’t have to in order to win a tournament. Sometimes it is best to sit back and be patient for a while in tournaments, although I for one, am always tempted to try and keep the momentum going when I am building chips, whether by hitting flops or simply by bluffing some of them. As to the question of how often you should bluff, the simple answer would be to say ‘whenever you feel your opponent is weak’ but it is not that simple. You can never be completely and entirely sure your opponent has no reason to call a bet at all, but you have to trust your feel of the situation at any given time.

Although I personally bluff more pots than I probably should sometimes, it can be more profitable to you as a pokeren player, to sit by, and wait. After all, discretion, as they say, is often the better part of valour.

When to Chase Hands in Poker:

15 October 2008

Chasing hands is not something you preferably wish to be doing in pokeren usually, but sometimes the circumstances mean that you are being given the right price to do so. Much of knowing when to chase a big hand depends on odds.

KLIK DEZE LINK

Firstly, consider how much it is to call the bet, secondly how much will be in the pot once you call, and thirdly, work out your chances of making your hand. If you are calling a bet of 200 into a pot of potentially 800 chips, you need odds of 4 to 1 or better on making your hand, to make it a reasonable call. The odds on making different hands are something you should learn and familiarise yourself with, because although it sounds complicated, it isn’t when you consider the most likely circumstances you will need to work out the odds of. Often you might flop a flush draw, with four cards to a suit, or an open ended straight draw, and having even a rough idea of what your odds are will always help you along.

In some games, such as Omaha, it is possible to be drawing to a hand and still be a statistical favourite to win the pot due to the amount of outs you have, so drawing to hands is not always a bad thing. I like to raise with draws myself, because you give yourself a chance to pick the pot up without having to hit your outs, and if they call and you catch your card, you have already started to build a nice pot.

Stealing Pots:

8 October 2008

Picking up pots which you may not have ended up winning otherwise, is extremely important to being successful in tournaments, and indeed cash play.

KLIK DEZE LINK

We all have our fair share of luck as players, and we could keep our chip or cash level afloat simply by winning the blinds on each orbit of the table. Luck would dictate that on average we will have the winning hand once each orbit of play, but to overpower and eliminate your opponents at the table, this is not enough. To reach the final table and perhaps even win a tournament, you need to pick up pots through aggression and tactful play, and this is where the skill of the game comes to the fore.

The value of money means that people will be loathe to risk what they feel they are likely to lose when they turn over their hand, so as a player, you must convince them they are losing the hand to steal the pot. Of course your reads on an opponent are very important here too.

This is because if you are trying to convince an opponent they are going to lose when they have just hit a very strong hand, needless to say, you will fail. You have to pick up the pots where your opponent has a vulnerable hand, and one which could easily be bested.

This requires a great amount of judgement, but your opponents betting patterns and demeanour will always tell it’s own tale about how strong your their hand is. The most difficult part is deciphering these telltale signs, but if you can do so with consistency and accuracy, you have mastered one of the most fundamental skills of poker.
